TODAY IN HISTORY: One hundred years ago on January 25th, 1915, the first transcontinental phone call took place. Ahoy! Ahoy! Mr. Watson, are you there? Do you hear me? So spoke Alexander Graham Bell to associate Thomas Watson, over a line stretching more than 3,400 miles, marking the first transcontinental telephone call. Yes, Mr. Bell, I hear you perfectly, Watson replied. Do you hear me well? What is now a common occurrence was a technological marvel. No longer would humans be separated & unable to communicate. It took 90 years to be the most transparent technology, but telecommunications, the Internet, & real time communications took its first step here. This first conversation between Alexander Graham Bell & Thomas Watson, who were separated geographically by 3,400 miles. That historic first call was initiated by Bell in New York City and included Vail, US president Woodrow Wilson in the White House and Watson in San Francisco. We are talking over 3,400 miles as easily and clearly as we talked over two miles 38 years ago, Bell said in the historic call.
