Born on this day: (1951) Bootsy Collins, bass (James Brown, Parliament, Funkadelic, Bootsy’s Rubber Band), (1963) Natalie Merchant, singer (10,000 Maniacs). In 1965—Queen Elizabeth II invests The Beatles with their MBE’s at Buckingham Palace, London. According to a later, by most reports, exaggerated account by John Lennon, the group smoked marijuana in one of the palace bathrooms to calm their nerves. In 1974—Barry White scores his only US No.1 album with Can’t Get Enough. In 1984—Having spent the day listening to Ozzy Osbourne records, 19-year old John D. McCollum kills himself with a .22 caliber handgun. A year later, McCollum’s parents take court action against Osbourne and CBS Records, alleging that the song ‘Suicide Solution’ from the album ‘Blizzard Of Oz’ contributed to their son’s death. The case was eventually thrown out of court. In 1985—Whitney Houston is at No.1 on the Billboard singles chart with ‘Saving All My Love For You’, also a chart-topper in the UK. In 1993—Catholic churches in San Juan, Puerto Rico ask residents to tie black ribbons on trees in protest against Madonna’s first live appearance in the country.
