TODAY IN PANAY NEWS....I CANT BELIEVE I JUST WROTE THIS WHILE I WAS WAITING FOR THE LOCKER BOY YESTERDAY TO BRING TOILET PAPER TO THE CUBICLE OF A GOLF COURSE WHERE I SAT RELIEVING MYSELF FOR ABOUT THIRTY MINUTES AFTER A ROUND OF GOLF.....THAT IS HOW FERTILE WE WRITERS ARE IN THE MIDST OF THE LEADERSHIP CRISIS NOW BESETTING OUR COUTNRY..... WORM’S EYE VIEW: Leadership crisis October 13, 2014 BY ROMMEL YNION LIKE a rudderless boat drifting aimlessly through the sea, our country is now in danger. Buffeted by the winds of fate, it has surrendered its future to luck and chance, depending on whichever comes first. This is the true state of our nation. It is like a boat without a rudder or a ship without a captain or an aircraft carrier without satellites to guide its fighter jets to their targets. Nothing is more dangerous than this time when an endless epidemic of troubles try our souls. But when a plague descends upon our land, engulfing us, only to be met by the scarcity of doctors to cure us, we are, indeed, doomed to extinction. Yes, our country needs a leader who, like a doctor, can discern how debilitating our maladies are. But we try to look around and find nobody. Absolutely nobody. This absence of a socio-political “physician” is at the root of our travails as a nation. All of the candidates for the presidency in 2016 are all lightweights both in leadership and intellect. Gone are the days when a Claro M. Recto could enthrall us with their words of wisdom, when a Raul Manglapus spoke to our hearts with the music of language lulling us into hypnotic spell, when a Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino elevated our dreams to the level of reality. We don’t have those leaders anymore. Bereft of them, we only have to contend ourselves with morsels of their greatness. Look at our choices for the next presidential race. And we can’t help but weep in abject misery. What is happening to our country? Why don’t we have leaders anymore? Where have they gone? Our country now is mired in a moral crisis that has undermined us. And yet, we don’t see any end in sight to this. We can only see an unending road to perdition. Who among the politicians who have presented themselves as our presidential choices have the moral ascendancy to lead this nation to greatness? Sad to say, nobody. Alas, the human beings at the helm of our government are best known as politicians or simply cronies of the politician at the top of the political totem pole. We don’t call them leaders anymore. The mere fact that the word “leader” has ceased to be at the tip of our tongue simply means that it has become alien to us. Irrelevant, maybe. For it does not relate to reality anymore that besets us. We have to activate our faith in God again Who seems to embody our hope for a better future. Why don’t we put God to task by kneeling before Him and ask Him to provide us with the key to the leader that we need? We need the likes of a Nelson Mandela or a Mahatma Gandhi to puncture our souls so they will cease to be inured to reality and start to become more sensitive to the issues bedeviling us. To sum up all the issues that weighed down on us, we can only describe them in two words: moral decay. I am often fond of quoting Dante who once said: “The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who in time of great moral crisis maintain their neutrality.” Having said that, we all have to take a stand now, inundated as we are by an avalanche of scandals related to how corrupt our government has become. This is not a time for politicking anymore, but for soul-searching to unearth once and for all the purpose for which we chose to be governed by a government of laws, not of men. The process to ferret out the truth may take a long time. But we need to subject ourselves to this arduous experiment to get to the bottom of things from which we can rise phoenix-like, guided by the principles that had constituted the foundation of this punch-drunk republic. Let us seize this moment of truth, not shrink from it. After all, it is only in facing our problems head-on that we can crack the jar of mysteries and behold the key to our dreams, unencumbered by propaganda that have only misled us to the quagmire of socio-political malaise. Yes, now is the time to search for truth to discover the giant within us that can elevate us to a level of civility to which we all belong not only as citizens of this country, but as children of God.
