TODAY IN THE PAST: MAY 3, 1691 LONDON: Edmond Halley, renowned throughout Europe as a comet hunter, proposes to the Royal Astronomical Society a startling theory: that the earth is hollow, containing within a second, smaller earth, and within that one a third, and at the very center—even better than the one he already had discovered. It was the only way, he reasoned, to explain where the comets were coming from. He was widely mocked for this belief, and rightly so: It is madness. However, it would form the basis of much Hollow Earth speculation for centuries to come. —Judge John Hodgmans More Information Than You Require (2008) \|/ Reposted by: -H- Team /|\ Hodgmania
