TODAY IN US AIR AND SPACE HISTORY: 1964 - Three US Air Force airmen spent 38 days in a simulated spaceship to test a helium mixture of atmosphere in future space flights. For the first 15 days, the airmen, all volunteers, were at ground‐level conditions of pressure and atmosphere, breathing normal air of about 20 per cent oxygen and 80 per cent nitrogen. Then, for 16 days they breathed a mixture of 44 per cent oxygen and 56 per cent helium at a simulated altitude of 18,000 feet. The remainder of the time was at ground conditions.
