TODAY IS THE DAY We Rock Queen’s Park Savannah With Our GLAUCOMA WALK! Today’s Trinidad and Tobago Optometrists Association Talk and Walk 2014 around Queen’s Park Savannah from 3 to 6 PM, is the high point of our World Glaucoma Week. This walk is not our walk alone. It is a walk for ALL the People of Trinidad and Tobago. This walk is but one small step in the march against preventable blindness caused by glaucoma. It is one small step for all the People of the Caribbean who live day to day with the realities of glaucoma, all too many blinded by this disease. Each step reminds us that countries all around the world are united in focusing their energies and resources to bringing understanding of glaucoma out of the dark and into the light. People in many lands of many races and many faiths have come together today to shine a light. Let’s all shine a light on glaucoma’s prevalence, its known risk factors, its usual lack of initial symptoms, the means of detection, possible treatments, prognoses of the different forms of this disease factored from lifelong treatment compliance. People in many places are taking steps toward unity in establishing a network of support across many aspects of life for people found to have glaucoma, together with their families and communities. Today as we walk, as we raise our banner and posters, we are also raising awareness. Our families, friends and neighbours see us taking time away from making money, making merry, or merely taking time for ourselves. They see us becoming a beacon of light to the people of Trinidad and Tobago. Our walk is our dance out from the dark oppression of glaucoma, and into the light where rather than the 2nd most common cause of blindness and most preventable cause of blindness, glaucoma becomes the most PREVENTED form of blindness. Just a few quick notes: PARKING: Enter the drive onto the Savannah across from NAPA. Please DO NOT PARK ON THE GRASS. We can park on the paved areas at the paddock. HYDRATION: We will be outside from 3 PM to 6 PM and it is important to stay hydrated to avoid heat exhaustion. We will have drinks available. Be sure to take a drink with you as you set out on your walk around the savannah. And be sure to throw your bottles inside the trash bins along the way. TRASH: Thanks in advance for helping keep our park beautiful and green. Let’s bag all our empty bottles, wrappers and rinds. This is TT’s premiere park. Let’s leave it even nicer than we find it. We have trash bags available for our area and our walk.
