TODAY YEARS AGO....25 September 1965 - William Bill Wishnick won the first edition of the Hennessy Cup, off Long Beach, his second career victory and of the season, with the white 28 Donzi powered Holman Moody Ford, Broad Jumper. Wishnick along with former mechanic of Bertram, Bobby Moore and Allan Brown triumphs in the year in which the offshore lands on the west coast, in the Pacific, dominating a fleet of 11 entrants with the best of competitors who at the time was in the USA. In only four ended the race and the New Yorker prevailed 3 minutes on Aronow in a same version and same engine hull of Wishnick but with a flat deck. Third was Bertram in the 31 Bertram of the brothers Gardner. 1976 - Michael Doxford won the Spithead Trophy, off Hamble, his first career victory, aboard the 35 Cigarette powered MerCruiser, Limit Up recently purchased by the American Tushinsky that had drove it in the same year under the name Jampin Jack. The victory of Doxford, which was with the t-man Tim Powell, was like a symbolic passing of the baton as British best driver with the runner-up Don Shead,that however won the National Title. The race held even if the sea is rough saw at the start all the major players of the season. 1981 - Tony Garcia wins the San Francisco Bay Fun Run 2, MBRA Championship, his second win of the season and career, on the 38 Scarab powered MerCruiser and Arneson surface drives, Sea Sweep. In a week Garcia makes an encore in a race in San Francisco showing that the surface drives of Howard Arneson are finally in place and reliable, in fact starting a new era. The race was very similar to the previous one ie with the two 38 Scarab of Garcia and Nordskog in the lead, but with the variation in the final with the latter that was forced to retire, leaving the victory to the Hispanic in the race and in MBRA Championship for the second consecutive time. 1982 - Tony Garcia wins the third and final edition of the Michelob Light-Grand Bahama 200, off Freeport, Bahamas, his fifth race of his career and third of the season, the cat in playwood of the Philippines 38 Cougar powered KS & W, Michelob Light . The APBA offshore circuit returns for the last time in one of the main temples of the offshore history, Freeport, Grand Bahama, where for ten years had held the legendary Bahamas 500 and Garcia gets third win in a row in 6 weeks with the same cat of 38 now with the sponsor of a famous type of beer,like the race. The Californian won by beating a host of mono as the second, the 38 Scarab by Betty Cook with the same sponsor of Garcia,six minutes behind, while finished fourth with a single engine,Jerry Jacoby on his 37 6 Cigarette obtained the National Title.
