TOGETHER FOREVER. In the beginning, God made humanity male and female. This creation set a pattern for marriage, for this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? (Matthew 19:4-5). Marriage is unique in all ways, aside from being the oldest human relationship and the harbinger of interpersonal relationships. One, it is the more intimate and binding union than even paternal or filial affection. Two, the family, the foundation of the society, is a product of it. And three, the man shall cleave to his wife, literally translated in the original Greek, shall be firmly cemented to his wife. This is a beautiful metaphor, which implies that nothing but death can terminate the union.
