TOP 10 TIPS to keep loved ones safe when driving in a heatwave: 1. Never leave children or animals unattended in your car – even with the windows left down or the air conditioning on. 2. Try to limit your travel with children or animals to the earlier hours of the day. 3. Ensure that children aren’t seated on liners or blankets as this will inhibit air circulation. 4. Never cover a baby capsule or seat to create shade, as this will increase temperatures. Place the shade over the window instead, using only an approved mesh screen when driving. 5. Dress children in light, loose clothing made from natural fibres – ideally covering limbs to minimise risk of sunburn. Apply sunscreen before starting your journey. 6. Keep children & animals hydrated with water, typically more than youd usually provide. Dont offer sugary/carbonated drinks as these can contribute to dehydration. Increase frequency if breastfeeding. 7. Wipe your child down with a cloth dampened in lukewarm water to provide cooling comfort. 8. Be wary of releasing animals from cars to walk on bitumen, which will get extremely hot during a heatwave and can burn their paws. 9. If your child is showing signs of heatstroke – irritability, dry skin, loss of appetite or thirst, less urination – seek medical advice. 10. If you pet shows signs of heatstroke: sweating, excessive panting, drooling from a fully-extended tongue, immediately provide a drink and bring them to shade. If symptoms persist, consult vet.
