TOP 8 Name: Ryan Clark Ministry: Environment Branch: Environmental Protection Position: Environmental Research Assistant 7/28/2014 A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles Tim Cahill Life to me has always been a progressive adventure, always changing with new experiences and possibilities. I was one of two students that were given the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the southern half of the province to determine the current condition and presence of underground coal mines. Our purpose was to safely identify risks at abandoned underground mines and develop a management plan designed to provide public safety and protect wildlife and infrastructure investments. Through measurements using GPS, rangefinders, imagery, historical information and personal encounters, my colleague and I developed a historical perspective of how and where specific coal mines once operated. During the assessment process it was important to establish landowner relationships in order to gain knowledge about how their land and the coal industry have changed over time. Additionally, this experience allowed me to interact with colleagues from the Ministries of Economy, Government Relations and Environment in a collaborative team atmosphere. My travels have allowed me to look into the remnants and records of our past, and have given me the tools to analyze some of the roots on which this province was built. With all of the locations travelled and all of the amazing people met over the last 3 months, I have gained an entirely new perspective of this beautiful province, and this privilege has made my life-long journey that much more amazing.
