TOP SEVEN IDENTIFIED AS DIAMOND MINERAL WATER JUNIOR CHESS QUALIFIERS CONCLUDE Former National Junior Chess Champion Haifeng Su is heading the list of the top seven junior chess medalists who have qualified to enter and challenge reigning National Junior Champion Anthony Drayton for the title. Drayton holds a FIDE rating of 1801. Su defeated joint tournament leader Omar Britton Grant during their anticipated fourth round encounter to assume a comfortable lead on the final day, Saturday October 5, at the Carifesta Sports Complex. The others heading into the 2013 National Junior Chess Championship later this month are: Davion Mars, Roberto Neto, Saeed Ali, lone female Sheriffa Ali, Omar Britton Grant and Rashad Hussain. The lone female player also received an extra medal for representing the distaff side. The point standings at the end of the seven round tournament read: Haifeng Su six, Davion Mars five, Roberto Neto four and a half, Saeed and Sheriffa Ali and Omar Britton Grant four each while Rashad Hussain ended with three and a half points. One point is given for a win, half for a drawn game and zero point for a loss. Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, attended the brief presentation ceremony at the end of the tournament and, while congratulating all the players for their efforts, challenged them to spread the game among their friends. He reiterated his ministry’s support towards the growth of chess and referred to the importance of thinking which the game demands. The qualifiers tournament was sponsored by Demerara Distillers Ltd. under the Diamond Mineral Water brand. The Guyana Chess Federation extends its gratitude to the company yet again for its support.
