TOPIC: Faith In the Fiery Furnace TEXT: JOB 5:17-27 Key Verse: “He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee” (Job 5:19). When 38-year-old Carlotta Bennett realized the water in her house had reached her family’s hiding place in the attic, she lost control of her emotions. She had good reasons to panic. Hurricane Katrina was blowing sections of the roof off her home; her house was off its foundation, and the rising water was threatening to drown the five people trapped in the attic. Two huge trees had fallen around the house, one in front, the other at the back. As the house shifted from side to side, the trees wedged the house in place and kept it from collapsing. Nevertheless, every new blast of wind, and the rising water, threatened to kill the entire family. That’s when Carlotta’s 4- year-old daughter decided it was time to pray. When the child finished praying, the water started receding. All five members made their way out of the building to safety. Thankfully, the Bible isn’t silent on the subject of suffering. One of the oldest stories in recorded history in the Bible pictures a man named Job who experienced so much suffering. Many wondered how he managed to cope. In fact, the way he dealt with his suffering has been a source of strength ever since people began searching the Bible for answers. Although his friends were “miserable comforters” most of the time, Job never allowed their cynical remarks to sway him from the course of righteousness. Many things about faith do not necessarily make sense to those outside the circle of faith. What are our options in the midst of out- of-control suffering? On the one hand, we could reject the God who allows suffering, as many do. On the other, we could trust the only Being who is in control of the universe. Exercising faith in times of suffering may sound ridiculous, but placing your life in the hands of the only God who can take care of you in this world and the next is ultimately the only logical action a person can ever take. Thought for the DAY: The fiery furnace is usually the place where the valiant are produced.
