TOPIC: HONESTY DEMANDED TEXT: LEVITICUS 6:1-7 Key Verse : “Or have found that which was lost, and lieth concerning it, and sweareth falsely; in any of all these that a man doeth, sinning therein” (Leviticus 6:3). In August 2012, a taxi driver in Nigeria’s state capital, Abuja was rewarded by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) for returning the sum of N18 million, about ($ 120,000) left in his cab by a passenger. The driver said he was at a carwash point when he discovered the bag left in his car by the passenger and he decided to do the right thing. In our text today, God instructed Moses to warn all Israel against enrichment of selves through false means. This was to ensure a society free from people who profit by false means. Like the taxi man’s story, God has always rewarded faithfulness. While there are many cases of taxi drivers who returned money and other valuable items forgotten in their cabs, cases abound also of those who decided to steal such items. In these days of want, many people are no longer faithful. Some so-called believers could claim such forgotten item/money was a miracle from God. Nowadays, people get into activities that are inhuman and ungodly in order to make money. Some people falsify documents to claim ownership of other people’s money or property. Believers must understand that lost but found items are not to be appropriated for personal use. God told Moses that such must be returned to the appropriate owner and restitution made. Whether it is something delivered to you to keep and you lied that it was stolen, whereas you appropriated it for personal use, or something you took from someone violently; or things got in a deceitful way or people’s lost items that you found and kept for your own use, God’s standard is very clear: all stolen items must be restored and appropriate restitutions made. Thought for the Day : Honesty is the best policy.
