TOPIC: IT IS WELL TEXT: I Kings 4:18-37 Memory Verse: Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well. (2 Kings 4:26). Our memory verse tells of the woman of Shunem. She had been barren for many years, and in that condition, she noticed Elisha as an holy man of God and gave him an accommodation. This led to her receiving a Prophetic blessing from God- a male child. After some years of the boys existence, he died. Her only child gone, the only heir they had. Oh what agony and pain she went through! Yet, in all this she said it is well. Like Job, she knew, that her Redeemer liveth, If He has His eyes on the sparrow, surely, His eyes are on you too. Her condition was heart- breaking, yet she could say IT IS WELL. O that we would have Christians as this woman in our days! Who would rather not grumble and mumur like the mixed multitude in the wildernes, accusing God of their demise, but Christians who can say like the woman of Shunem It is well, like Job My Redeemer liveth, and like Paul that Nothing can separate us from the love of God. Theres a popular hymn we sing today in our Churches, written by Horatio G. Spafford. This hymn was written after traumatic events in Spafford’s life. The first was the death of their only son from Scarlet Fever in 1870. Second was the 1871 Great Chicago Fire which ruined him financially (he had been a successful lawyer and had invested significantly in property in the area of Chicago which was decimated by the great fire). His business interests were further hit by the economic downturn of 1873 at which time he had planned to travel to Europe with his family on the SS Ville du Havre. In a late change of plan, he sent the family ahead while he was delayed on business concerning zoning problems following the Great Chicago Fire. While crossing the Atlantic, the ship sank rapidly after a collision with a sea vessel, the Loch Earn, and all four of Spaffords daughters died. His wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram, Saved alone …. Shortly afterwards, as Spafford traveled to meet his grieving wife, he was inspired to write these words as his ship passed near where his daughters had died: When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to know, It is well, it is well, with my soul... When you find your self in similar situations, what do you do? Do you drown in the pool of cognition- thinking about suicide? Do you wander in the wilderness of murmuring? Or do you turn to your Creator. He says Be still and know that I am God Know this There are bad circumstances in life which are common to all men, but what distinguishes the Hero from the Zero, the Victor from the Vanquished is HOW the sitiuation was handled, and the WORDS that were spoken. When things seem bad, when troubles assail, and dangers affright, when friends despise and foes abound, when the heaven over you seems to be brass and the earth iron, when the rain seems to be acid, and the sun over you ceases to shine, Never be dismayed, for JEHOVAH is sitted on the throne, your Redeemer liveth, and His eye is on the sparrow. Therefore IT IS WELL WITH YOUR SOUL. Quote of the Day: Your confessions today can make or mar your tomorrow Action: Reject negative confessions: always say IT IS WELL.
