TOSHIO HIRANO CHANGES GEARS The Bay Areas own Japanese cowboy, Toshio Hirano, is putting his influence, Jimmy Rodgers, and all the 50s and 60s hillbillies he admirers, behind him for now. After 30 years, they deserve a rest. The new Toshio has been playing bluegrass with mandolin picker Dave Barry, performing as Mountain Dojo for a 2-3 years now. Toshio solo has enjoyed nine years of monthly shows at Amnesia and the Rite Spot, among others. Only in San Francisco, could a Japanese Cowboy appeal to hipsters, trendies, techies and just plain folks as well as Toshio Hirano. His last performance as the Japanese cowboy will be tomorrow, January 27th at the Rite Spot.
