TOWARDS #Election_2015: TASTE BUDS (1) One of the highlights of election campaigns is (or should be) the effort by candidates to persuade the electorate towards voting in a party as the most relevant and viable for tenure. Aside the mudslinging across parties to caricature opponents, voters tend to be swayed more by palatable promises than by the usual political propaganda. Whether GEJ is the right man for the job or not, or whether GMB is this or that, or failed to do so and so, do not give the electorate real substance for decision making towards February 15. That said, what exactly informs our decisions for casting votes? Forgive me for not being as upfront as many erudite pundits, but some pressing issues that may have serious weight in helping us to decide would be summed in a few questions: What are APCs or PDPs strong points to persuade the electorate that this/that is THE party for the NOW? Weve heard so much about the anti-corruption stance of APCs strongman, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd). But is that all there is to governance? We remember that the bane of corruption was the basis of the December 1983 coup detat where the civilian President Shehu Shari was overthrown by the military; but is it too much to note that the country has moved on ever since? While on the one hand we want to curb excesses, what about development on the other hand? What is APC saying louder than fighting corruption? If you factor in another of APCs concerns: NO FIRST LADY if the party wins the elections. Ha! Na wah o! How does this even remotely bear upon national prosperity and economic development? Please, I cant shout; but lets narrow our concerns to just a few pointers to help the APC: what about - • Employment? • Education? • Healthcare? • Security? • Power Supply? What has APC been saying about these determiners as loudly as they have been decrying corruption? Now, now, now.. friends. This is not an anti-APC piece. I just put this out there because I havent heard anything else about what the party hopes to achieve over and above what PDP is said to have covered. Free food for primary schools in two of APCs states doesnt say much either. Are there stuff that Im missing out on?
