TOWN OF OWEGO TAXPAYERS The Town of Owego Fire District/Commissioners are raising your fire protection taxes 22% for 2015. The reason for this is simple. They need to replace lost revenue from the EMS coverage contract that was not renewed with the Apalachin FD. Instead of tightening the Fire Districts belt they are going to maintain the 7 paid medics at $40,000 per/yr each, and the Manager of the District, $60,000+ per/yr. Now every taxpayer/property owner, businesses too, must bear the burden for them. With ZERO input from you. Now they want to build the new fire station on RT 38 at the cost of $1.1 million dollars. With ZERO input from you. After the upfront cost of construction, how much will your taxes increase for 2016 and beyond? Take into consideration upkeep on the building, the equipment (which will need to be replaced soon, 1 fire truck is 25 years old right now), gear for members etc..... WE must stop this now!!!!! WE need to change to way the Fire District/Commissioners do business. They are voted in by the public, therefore WE the taxpayer need to have a say how OUR money is spent. STOP them from using another agency to do their bidding; a private agency that does not require public input. That has to CHANGE.
