TPPA IN THE EASTERN HEMISPHERE, TAFTA IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE GLOBALIZATION ACCORDING TO UNCLE SAM By the strangest whim of timely coincidence – I was writing about the TAFTA yesterday (Trans-Atlantic Free Trade Agreement) being negotiated from July 2013 between the US and EU in similar secretive conditions and whose spinoff by the time it comes into force in 2015 will be to make the sovereign states of the EU similarly subservient to US-EU Multinational interests. As you highlight here in relation to the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement, the proceedings have been highly secretive, void of any of the public interest debates that would certainly cause the instrumental workings of such a treaty to be sent into remission, and with the same like compliance of local governments as you attribute here to Tony Abbott’s. In the case of the TAFTA, full enforcement would compromise any effectiveness of the concept of political alternance and or popular mass mobilizations since any ratification of amendments to the legislation would require the unanimous consent of all signatories to the treaty. It would make individual parties to the treaty (corporations and governments) liable to lawsuits in reparations in the case where labour legislation or environmental constraint laws got into the way of profits. It would, in the final analysis, seek to solve the Western Problem of Competitiveness, not by eliciting the clever economies as we’d been promised (as a solution to the problems of offshore relocations and technology and capital transfers), but by imposing the Asian model of Capitalism on US and EU citizens – that is by reducing the whole equation of labour and capital to its lowest common denominator – the milling and willing labour markets of Asia. I thought at one time the Neo Liberal Agenda driven process of Globalization would like nothing better than to return all of us to an earlier era of Victorian Capitalism, but I see now that I was wrong: what it seeks, in both East and West, is to return us to the golden era of the pre Anciens Régimes.
