TRADING TRIVIA A bull is someone who believes the stock market - TopicsExpress

TRADING TRIVIA A bull is someone who believes the stock market will go up and a bear is someone who believes the stock market will go down. A bull market is a rising market and a bear market is a falling market. The book, Every Man His Own Broker, published in 1761, contains the first usage of the words Bull and Bear as types of investors. It was written by Thomas Mortimer. The picture shows the 13th edition. This popular guide was later translated into German, Dutch, French and Italian. It appeared at a time when Great Britain was codifying its position as the most sophisticated commercial empire in the world. At the time of the eleventh edition stock in the East India Company held an allure comparable to shares in internet start-ups in the mid-1990s. As his lengthy sub-title title suggests, Mortimer [1730-1810] was critical of brokers and hostile toward speculators and jobbers. (the term jobber is a slang for market makers)
