TRAGIC SHAME Im not interested in laying blame in this post... but I could. I just want to relay a story of a woman being treated for cancer at a local facility. She has been battling for sometime and while its hard to say if she is winning...she is still living and enjoying life the best she can. Years ago I watched my Dad go through this same valley. He didnt survive. Then my Mother faced the same, and her story ended the same way. So while I dont know how it is to personally face cancer...I know how it is to watch a loved one deal with lows, highs, despair, hope, fear, faith, tears, desperate but sometimes joyful smiles. So I could understand the emotions of the one telling me the story of a particular local woman. In this case, the story teller is not related to the woman, but is a hospital nurse helping this woman and others during cancer treatments. The nurses voice is breaking and her eyes misting as she speaks. Its not fair, she says. Then she tells me about the woman who is now in the middle of her cancer treatments. The nurse has been told that the next time the woman comes in ... she will be told that the hospital can no longer treat her. Her insurance will no longer be accepted at this facility because of changes in the health care laws. The nurse says, Shes like family. Like my mother. Then she repeats, Its not fair. I dont know the nurse, but I do know her story is similar to another I was told a few days earlier. Ive always believed we needed health care reform that would cover existing or catastrophic situations, but what we have now is not the answer. This version of health care reform which was supposed to insure the uninsured ... is un-insuring the insured. Obviously, this is just one of many such stories. As the nurse said, Its not fair.
