TRAIN SMOKE WIP photos. First of all, many thanks to Matthew Malkiewicz for allowing me to use his incredible train photo! Photo 1: First I start out by transferring as much detail from the photo as possible. (Ive darkened my graphite paper lines so you can see them better.) Photo 2: I find and burn the darker areas of the smoke, paying close attention to my guidelines. Photo 3: I keep working my way further and further into the plume, always blocking in the darker areas first then blending them into the lighter areas. Photo 4: I rely heavily on my guidelines to keep my place in this maze of smoke! I often work with one finger on my reference photo to hold my place while I burn. So when I look back and forth from photo to burning I know exactly where Im working. Photo 5: Most of the smoke plume is laid out so now I work on creating definition in the sky. By darkening the sky behind the white smoke it helps to pop the plume forward. I also keep blending the shades in the smoke... lots and lots of blending! Using a lower temp really helps with blending. Photo 6: Ive smoothed out the smoke plume even more and Im darkening the sky along the right side of the smoke. Im no longer following my reference photo since it showed white smoke against a blue sky. Without color I need to get creative with shading to keep the lightest part of the plume from disappearing into the sky. Photo 7: Im still working on darkening the sky and trying to incorporate some light, wispy clouds. I still have a lot of shading to do on the sky before Im happy with the overall balance. Ill continue tinkering with the sky, finish the foreground and then Ill share the final piece soon. :)
