TRAINING TIP: How to Intensify Your Planks Planks or bridges are a popular and effective way to train the core. Planks, if done properly, are great for engaging the deeper muscles of the core. They focus on stabilizing and strengthening the whole core through isometric contractions. Planks also have the tendency of becoming boring once they are mastered. Here are a couple of ways to add variety to your planks to make them fun and intense: Add a level of instability: This can be done by placing your hands or feet on an unstable surface like a medicine ball or stability ball. You can also try lifting an arm or foot off the ground with the focus of keeping your hips and trunk in place with no shifting or rotation. Here are a couple of examples in the pictures below.
