[TRANS @mug_ping] Diary of Night Watchmen, Romantic Ghost Story Captivating the Small Screen Amidst the impending premiere broadcast of Diary of Night Watchmen on 4 August, the anticipation of the viewers are pouring in. MBC Monday-Tuesday drama Diary of Night Watchmen (scriptwriter Yoo Dong Yoon, director Lee Joo Hwan) is a production which holds itself out as the Korean version of Ghost Busters. Following SBS Masters Sun (scriptwriter Hong Jung Eun & Hong Mi Ran, director Jin Hyuk), there is attention focusing on whether it will once again gain success in the romantic horror comedy genre. Diary of Night Watchmen is a ghost-busting story which depicts the love and friendship of youths during the Joseon period. The main plot revolves around 4 young night watchmen who stand guard to protect the palace and the king from ghosts, and who fight a lone battle while protecting and reviving the Joseon dynasty and the rare treasures. However, unlike a story depicting the past and the story of ghosts through frightening subject matter, a new broadened scope has been discovered recently with ghosts appearing in romantic comedy dramas. Shim Eun Has 1994 MBC drama M, SBS 1999 Ghost and 2009s Hometown of Legends broadcast on KBS2 and MBCs Spirit etc were typical horror dramas with scary ghosts as their subject matter. However, entering into 2010, one could see a different appearance of dramas with ghosts as the subject matter. Notwithstanding that SBS My Girlfriend is a Gumiho was a ghost story, they showed off a vivacious appeal using romantic comedy elements. Compared to KBS2 Gumiho: Tale of the Foxs Child which ended with an average viewer ratings of 12%, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho recorded viewer ratings over 20%, proving its popularity. By abandoning the cliched plot settings of how ghosts only appear in a horror fashion in dramas, their pleasant appearance in dramas nowadays has captured the viewers hearts in a fresh manner. Subsequently, while the ghost story in 2011 SBS drama 49 Days integrated melodrama elements and 2012 OCNs Vampire Prosecutor incorporated crime investigation elements, they were not able to enjoy huge popularity. However, SBS Masters Sun which was broadcast last year saw it being a runaway hit with viewer ratings exceeding 20%, inclining the slant towards an atmosphere of romantic comedy horror stories are undoubtedly the best. Meanwhile, the scriptwriting duties of Diary of Night Watchmen are helmed by writer Yoo Dong Yoon, who had written dramas The Kings Dream, Dae Mul (Big Thing), The King and I, Age of Warriors and Ladies of the Palace. The directing is helmed by Producer Lee Joo Hwan, who has his forte in period dramas through dramas such as Jumong and Shin Don. The production is led by Raemongraein, which had created Sungkyunkwan Scandal, which enjoyed huge popularity in 2010. With the unique subject matter coupled with screenwriters, directors and production companies which one can have faith in, Diary of Night Watchmen which boasts of this marvellous combination creates anticipation for the small screen in the upcoming summer in August. bit.ly/VU8341
