TRAVEL ALERT: The new amendment to the Immigration Act, which is expected to come into effect on July 1, requires that all parents arriving, transiting and departing from South Africa produce a fully unabridged birth certificate for their children under the age of 18. Airlines will be forced to refuse travel to families not in possession of these documents. In the case where only one parent is travelling with the children, consent in the form of an affidavit from the other parent registered is required. Alternatively, either a court order granting full parental responsibilities and rights or a death certificate of the other parent must be produced. Many travellers and agents have expressed concern over Home Affairs’ turnaround time in issuing the documents but the Department told eTNW that as long as parents had proof that they had applied, they will be allowed to exit and enter the country. Ricardo Abramse, a spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs, said that as of July 1, those who have applied but not yet received the unabridged certificate will need to prove that they have applied for it by presenting the receipt that is issued on application as well as the abridged birth certificate. Ricardo added that those who departed before the implementation date but returning after July 1 would not be affected.
