TREE GROWING CAMPAIGN REACHES WUNDANYI SUB COUNTY H.E the Governor, Eng. John Mruttu met stakeholders from the Kenya Forest Service, Community Forest Associations, Charcoal Producers Associations, Ranchers, Non-governmental Associations, Community based Organizations as well as members of the public drawn from various regions of Wundanyi Sub County to carry on with the campaign of fostering tree growing in Taita Taveta County with the view of improving forest cover that is currently less than 1%. Speaking during the meeting, H.E the Governor acknowledged the need of conserving the environment by improving forest cover for among many other reasons, conserve our water sources adding that our major water sources like Mzima Springs and Lake Challa originate from neighboring County of Makueni (Chullu hills) and neighboring country of Tanzania (Mt. Kilimanjaro) respectively. In laying down the way forward, Eng. Mruttu asserted the following; 1.Suspension of all tree cutting activities or whereof permits with effect from today, 10th Dec, 2014 until all stakeholders are engaged on fresh terms. 2.Gazettement of all community forests by the County Assembly which will aid improvement of the forest cover in the county by 5,300 hectares. 3.Introduction of tree growing campaigns in schools where every student will be required to ‘grow’ a tree and be compensated upon valuation of the trees on completion. 4.Growing of trees in every government offices as a way of leading the tree growing campaign from the front. 5.Including tree growing activity in every government function in the County. 6.Purchasing of modern jikos (for every sub county) that are more efficient and productive in producing charcoal with the aim of having charcoal producers adopting it. 7.Use of science based technology that is economical and efficient to make sure that more success is realized in this tree growing initiative. Others present in the meeting include the Ecosystem Forest Conservator-Taita Taveta County, Mr. Allan Ongere, Forester, Wundanyi Sub County, Mr. Wellington Mwamela and County Chief Officer for Mining and Environment, Ms. Pamela Dio, officials from both the County and the National government among other key stakeholders. Public Statement: Notice is hereby given to the County residents that; 1.A new batch of improved eucalyptus tree species and eucalyptus clowns have been received and available at a cost of only Kshs.12 and Kshs. 20 per seedling respectively in all Kenya Forest Service nurseries in the County. 2.To be on the lookout and report all cases of tree cutting that is currently suspended.
