TREVORS ANIMAL OF THE DAY APRIL 4, 2014 Nyctibius griseus. This is the common potoo, or just the potoo for short. This bird is very widespread, practically ubiquitous along Central and South America. As common as they are, especially in tropical South America, they are extremely difficult to catch. They are nocturnal birds, which means they only typically fly around at night in search for insects to eat. In fact, even at night, they dont fly around much at all. Like moths, they are able to stay still for long periods of time. Also like moths, they have a natural camouflage that protects them during the day. During the day, they sleep and contort their body in such a way that they look just like an extension of the branch theyre perched on. When not sleeping, they have their eyes slightly open, so as not to draw attention to their bright yellow irises. See the potoos amazing camouflage in action! https://youtube/watch?v=ZtjFG16ADZQ FUN FACT. DID YOU KNOW? 1. The potoos derpy appearance has made it quite popular on the internet. In fact, theres an internet meme, an image macro called Weird Stuff I Do Potoo. 2. Theyre monogamous birds and both parents share the responsibility equally in incubating the egg and raising the chick. 3. Im not actually sure if anyone actually reads these write-ups I do... sooo... sometimes I wanna grow out a beard, move to Canada, walk out in the middle of a blizzard and pour some orange juice on my beard, and ask pretty ladies to lick the orange icicles off my chin while they call me Capn Orangebeard. #birds #potoo #derpy #LOVEME
