TRIBALISM KILLING KENYA.. In the Kenyan online community, humanity is dead. The level of bigotry that is expressed during sad moments such as when one is mourning a loved one will shock you. Would you believe some Kenyans have become so miscreants, to even celebrate in one’s pain? When it comes to personal misfortunes, it is sickening to see someone celebrate for whatever reason. The nasty exchanges that followed the demise of Fidel Odinga, that of Kajwang, Mutula Kilonzo, those of the Mpeketoni and Mandera victims etc is very unfortunate. As has become a feature in social media, not only were many tweets petrifying, many were plainly horrific comments clothed in naked tribalism and reckless ethnic bigotry. It is mere common sense that when one loses a beloved one or suffers personal misfortune, all humanity, regardless of any enmity and tribal, political or ideological difference, comes together to express sincere compassion. President Uhurus gesture to condole Raila Odinga and his family should be adequate lesson to the tribal bigots on social media that even as we lynch each other online, politicians, regardless of their affiliations, know when to put aside their differences and be human. The hatred spewed on social platform is a psychosomatic symptom of a rotting society. Tribalism is killing Kenya. It is indescribable the amount of ethnic bile people harbour. Be it via Facebook status, writing on walls, Twitter updates, photos sharing, these are all extensions of you and your personality. It is good to note that contravening Section 132 of the Penal Code that proscribes against hate speech and demeaning authority of a public officer does not have an escape option. Last week’s unprecedented jailing of Alan Okelo, alias Lieutenant Wadi, a 4th-year university student for two years for posting abusive messages on his Facebook account should be an eyeopener to Kenyans on social media about dangers that furious, inconsiderate comments on the heat of moment can visit upon a user. The heartlessness of perverts in their posts are dumbfounding and can only be reigned by stringent social media communication laws.
