TRIPLE VIDEO PACKAGE FROM EARLY GAME OF THE YEAR: CENTRAL CATHOLIC TOPPLES MANTECA IN OVERTIME No Montell Bland? No problem for Central Catholic High-Modesto, which wheeled out another upcoming star in Friday’s Valley Oak League showdown with mighty Manteca. While the Raiders are two-time defending state small-school champions, Manteca won the Sac-Joaquin medium-school title last year and was within one foot of playing for a state title. There was plenty of hype leading up to the Raiders’ first game in the VOL, and the game lived up to it: Central Catholic scored in the first OT period and converted the do-or-die 2-point conversion for a 29-28 win over unbeaten Manteca. (A short video about the overtime is below, and here are the links for the first half of the game https://youtube/watch?v=cs-iKamuS_g&list=UUq_Rt2woTZHH2dz16VSyP6A and he second half of the Valley Oak League thriller https://youtube/watch?v=RDdQnvZzrn0&list=UUq_Rt2woTZHH2dz16VSyP6A) Six-foot-2, 200-pound junior Justin Rice scored all four of Central’s TDs, busted tackles tackles on the game-winning 2-pointer and rushed for 142 yards on 23 carries. The key to Rice’s night? He was shifty, he was strong and he followed his blocking. Manteca’s defensive line blocked a game-winning field goal bid, a 30-yarder with 10 seconds left, to force OT. (Rice had set up the kick with a 59-yard kickoff return). The Buffaloes had tied the game on Lechi Nkwocha’s short TD run minutes earlier. In OT, each game gets the ball at its opponent’s 10-yard line and has four plays to score. Manteca actually got five – CC had a pass interference penalty on third down – and it needed every one. Manteca got the ball first and scored on Darrion Kitson’s TD run from 2 feet. The PAT made it 28-21. Rice carried a defender in the end zone on the Raiders’ first play, then the Raiders ran the same play – with the same result for the win. Central Catholic coach Roger Canepa, who had bypassed a field goal from the 1 earlier in the game (Manteca stuffed a run to end that drive), said the blocked field goal influence his call to go for 2 and the win. So did Rice’s running style. Rice’s game-winning run from the 3-yard line set off a wild celebration with players and fans storming the field. It was CC’s first game in the VOL, after back-to-back state titles convinced Sac-Joaquin Section officials to move it to the higher league. NOTES: Bland was sidelined with an ankle injury … Manteca RB tossed a 35-yard TD to Luis Reyes early in the game, a play that caught CC’s defense flat footed … CC QB Huner Petlansky (6 of 16, 82 yards, INT) struggled throwing the ball, but his receivers also dropped an open pass in the end zone and a 40-yard toss … CC visits 4-0 Sierra next Friday and faces Oakdale (4-0) the final week of the regular season at The Corral. https://youtube/watch?
