TROFIM LYSENKO[1898-1976]Soviet geneticists, favored Lamarckian ideas, since they agreed with communist ideology and he rose to power under Staline. Lysenko banished Mendelian genetics and dominated Soviets Genetics for many years. Eventually, however, the evidence against Lamarckian inheritance was so strong that ideology had to give way to science. Lysenko was discredited and forced to resign. He is responsible for the shameful backwardness of Soviet biology and of genetics in particular, for the dissemination of pseudo- scientific views, for adventurism, for the degradation of learning, and for the defamation, firing, arrest, even death, of many genuine scientists.
