TROOP A NEWS RELEASE August 17, 2014 Unrestrained Driver Killed in Two Vehicle Crash on US Hwy 61 St. Francisville – Shortly after 7:15 pm on August 17, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on US Hwy 61 at LA Hwy 964 north of Thompson Creek in West Feliciana Parish. The crash took the life of 58 year old Sharron B. Villere of Jackson, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Villere was driving a 1997 Mitsubishi Mirage northbound on LA Hwy 964 towards US Hwy 61. At the same time 60 year old James Newton of Winnsboro was driving a 1995 Dodge Caravan southbound on US Hwy 61. Villere attempted to cross the southbound lanes of US Hwy 61 to turn left to travel north on US Hwy 61. As she did this, her Mitsubishi was struck on the driver’s side door by the southbound Caravan driven by Newton. Villere was unrestrained at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries as a result. Newton was properly restrained yet suffered moderate injuries. Driver impairment is not suspected on the part of either driver; however, toxicology samples were taken from both and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seat belt use. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up.
