TROOP A NEWS RELEASE January 24, 2014 Unrestrained Passenger Killed in St. James Parish Fatal Crash Gramercy – Shortly after 6:15 pm on January 24, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on I-10 westbound on the exit ramp at LA Hwy 641 in St. James Parish. The crash took the life of 65 year old Laura M. Barrios of Convent. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 70 year old Raymond F. Barrios, Jr. (also of Convent, husband of Laura Barrios) was driving a 2007 Buick Lacrosse westbound on the I-10 exit ramp at LA Hwy 641. For unknown reasons Barrios’ vehicle ran off the roadway to the left. Upon leaving the roadway the Buick struck a tree on the driver’s side. Laura Barrios (a passenger in the rear seat) was unrestrained and suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Raymond Barrios was properly restrained and suffered minor to moderate injuries. Impairment is not suspected; however, a toxicology sample was taken from Raymond Barrios and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. Contact Information: TFC Jared L.
