TROOP A NEWS RELEASE May 18, 2014 Motorcyclist Killed in East Baton Rouge Parish Fatal Crash BATON ROUGE – Shortly after 1:00 pm on May 18, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash involving a motorcycle that occurred on LA Hwy 3246 (Siegen Ln.) north of LA Hwy 427 (Perkins Rd.) in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash took the life of 72 year old Thomas W. Duke of Sunshine, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Duke was riding a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle southbound on Siegen Ln. As Duke was traveling in the right hand lane, his motorcycle ran off the roadway to the right, struck the concrete curb and re-entered the roadway. As a result Duke was ejected from his motorcycle. Duke was not wearing a DOT approved helmet and he suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Impairment is not suspected; however, Troopers have submitted a toxicology sample from him to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Driver distraction may have been a factor in this crash, and it remains under investigation. Troopers urge motorcyclists of all ages and experience levels to take extra precautions while riding and ensure that they are properly prepared and trained for a variety of riding conditions. Through participation in certified training programs, riders are educated on safe riding practices such as being visible, dressing for safety, applying effective riding strategies, and knowing the capabilities and limitations of their motorcycle. Motorcyclists are taught how to apply these safety practices to not only avoid being involved in a crash but to greatly reduce the chance of injury should a crash occur.
