TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE October 8, 2014 Single Vehicle Crash in Terrebonne Parish Results in Double Fatality of Unrestrained Occupants Gibson, La. – This morning at approximately 7:40 am, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop C began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash on La. 182 near Oak Forest Drive in Terrebonne Parish. The crash claimed the life of the two unrestrained occupants. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2005 Toyota Camry, occupied by Jerome Evans (B/M 23) and Dontrell Boykin (B/M 31) both of Gray, was traveling through moderate fog westbound on La. 182 east of South Bayou Black Drive. The driver, for reasons under investigation, failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway and traveled off of the right portion of the highway. As the Camry continued off road, it struck a tree, overturned, and entered into Bayou Black partially submerging the vehicle. Both Evans and Boykin suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and were pronounced dead on the scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office. Neither Evans nor Boykin were restrained and it is unknown at this time who was the driver. Impairment is also unknown at this time; however, blood samples were collected from both for toxicological examination. Those results are pending as this crash remains under investigation. Troopers witness firsthand the remarkable difference the use of a seat belt makes in reducing injuries and fatalities in crashes. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. Louisiana State Police also remind motorists that when driving in inclement weather to please reduce speed, allow more time for travel, maintain ample distance between vehicles, and to always avoid distractions.
