TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING: TROPICAL STORM “MARIO” (FUNG-WONG) ISSUED AT 5:00 AM, 20 SEPTEMBER 2014 (Valid for broadcast until the next bulletin to be issued at 11AM today) TROPICAL STORM “MARIO” HAS SLIGHTLY SLOWED DOWN AND INTENSIFIED WHILE MOVING OVER THE LUZON STRAIT. Location of eye/center: At 4:00 AM today, the center of Tropical Storm “MARIO” was estimated based on radar and other available data at 137 km Northwest of Laoag City (19.1 °N, 119.7°E). Strength: Maximum sustained winds of 95 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 120 kph. Movement: Forecast to move North at 15 kph. Forecast Positions: By tomorrow morning it will be at 254 km Northwest of Itbayat, Batanes and by Monday morning, it will be at 635 km North of Itbayat, Batanes or outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). PUBLIC STORM WARNING SIGNAL PSWS Luzon Visayas Mindanao Potential Impacts of the Winds # 2 (Winds of 61-100 kph is expected in at least 24 hrs) Calayan and Babuyan Group of Islands, Batanes Group of Islands, Apayao and Ilocos Norte Moderate damage to agriculture Rice and corn adversely affected Few large trees uprooted Large number of nipa and cogon houses partially or totally unroofed Old galvanized iron roofing may roll off Travel by all types of sea vessels is risky Travel by all types of aircrafts is risky #1 (Winds of 30-60 kph is expected in at least 36 hours) Cagayan, Kalinga, Abra and Ilocos Sur Twigs and branches of trees may be broken Banana plants may tilt or land flat on the ground Rice in flowering stage may suffer significant damage Some nipa and cogon houses may be partially unroofed Sea travel of small seacrafts and fishing boats is risky Residents in low lying and mountainous areas are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides. Estimated rainfall amount is from 7 – 20 mm per hour (moderate - intense) within the 350 km diameter of the Tropical Storm. The combined effect of Southwest Monsoon and TS “MARIO” will bring moderate to strong winds over central Luzon and the rest of Northern Luzon. Morover, these areas will have moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides. Fisherfolks and those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the seaboards of Luzon. The public and the disaster risk reduction and management council concerned are advised to take appropriate actions and watch for the next bulletin to be issued at 11AM today.
