TROY and Wallace sign agreement DOTHAN - Troy University and Wallace Community College officials signed an agreement today that would enable transfer students to complete their associate degree while pursuing their bachelors degree. The Reverse Transfer agreement permits former Wallace students who transfer to TROY to transfer eligible credits back to Wallace for the purpose of attaining an associate degree. Students qualified for reverse transfer will have earned at least 15 semester credit hours from Wallace, will have earned at least three semester credit hours from Troy University, and will be in good standing at both institutions. Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor of Troy University, said there has always been a strong link between the Alabama Community College System and TROY. Some 1,167 current TROY students formerly attended Wallace. “By any measure, we are not overly educated in Alabama and this program allows us to address that issue by granting a degree that is earned – it’s a win-win situation for the student, our institutions and our state,” Dr. Hawkins said. “It’s good public policy and that’s where we have got to keep our sights: not on individual interests, not on institutional interests, but on what’s in the best interest of the state of Alabama. Today is a step in that direction. I would predict that because this is the logical thing to do, probably public policy will be changed in the future so that students from all Alabama’s two-year colleges will have this same benefit from all the universities in the state,” he said. Dr. Linda Young, President of WCC, said the agreement was not only positive for Wallace students, but students throughout the community college system. “It truly takes a community to build a career, and it also takes partnerships such as this one with Troy University. It is a very important opportunity because the student is the beneficiary,” she said. “We’re giving the student an opportunity for success, and, as educators, we know that’s our business.” Also offering remarks were Tony Holland, dean of instructional affairs at Wallace, Dr. John Dew, senior vice chancellor for student services and administration at TROY, Jackie Screws, dean of student affairs at WCC’s Sparks Campus, Dr. Nakia Robinson, interim director of transitional education for the Department of Postsecondary Education, and Betty Peters, member, State Board of Education. TROY also has similar agreements in place with Lurleen B. Wallace Community College and Southern Union Community College.
