TRUE DETECTIVE (2014) is the 8-episode HBO series that I may be the last person to chime in on. Without cable TV, Im consuming pop culture after a nine month fasting period. Written and produced by Nic Pizzolato, directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, starring Woody Harrelson & Matthew McConaughey (who share a split credit like Newman/ McQueen in THE TOWERING INFERNO), this show isnt quite what I expected. True Detective? Not so much. Pizzolato takes a very sharp turn in the direction of David Fincher and SEVEN with this. Its a theatrical and occasionally pretentious show, but amid the archetypes and the monologues about the time and death and futility, etc., theres also real tension and atmosphere. Im to the point where Ill watch anything with Harrelson or McConaughey just to watch them act, and they get eight hours to do that here. To say this is more creatively charged than just about any feature film released in the same period would not be a wild claim.
