TRUTH AND FREEDOM This fiftieth year you shall make sacred by proclaiming liberty in the land for all its inhabitants. – Leviticus 25:10 Freedom is something I learned in school – something that I consider a legacy of the university to me. Throughout my years in the University of the Philippines, I learned not to be afraid to question the status quo, to not just say yes to what is normal, to look for new ways of looking at and doing things. I couldn’t accept that life only meant school, then a job, then marriage. In my mind, there must be something more to life than that. It was in that restlessness and seeking that I found the Lord. Aren’t truth and freedom interrelated? It is in seeking for truth that I found freedom in God, a freedom that is apparently sacred, if we base it on today’s verse. It is not surprising. Didn’t God Himself give freedom to us? For isn’t freedom of choice one of the most important gifts the Lord has given us? It’s no wonder then that all over the world, that desire for freedom continues to live on as shown in the fight for liberation in countries that are repressed. I can never thank the Lord enough for this freedom. Today, let us take time to appreciate the many ways we have been so blessed with freedom—and let us thank the Author for it. Joy Sosoban (jsosoban@gmail) Reflection: You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (John 8:32) Lord, You know everything. Give me the grace not only to be thankful for freedom, but also to handle it well. St. Peter Julian Eymard, pray for us.
