TRUTH TALK: People often ask me after theyve seen me perform where I get the courage to get up onstage and be all fat naked and weird in front of a room full of people. To be honest, its really never been that big of a deal. I was somehow born with a gene that gives me great joy to make a spectacle of myself. Last night we had a screening of the documentary Ive been editing for the last 6 months. Its the first feature film Ive ever worked on, and as you may have gathered via my social media posts, its been a really intense, challenging and rewarding journey (not to mention an incredible blessing and opportunity). About a dozen people were in attendance--people whose work I admire and opinions I respect, people who I like and want to like me back. I think I got a first taste of the fear, dread, and terror that some people feel when faced with the prospect of speaking or performing in front of other people. Its an awful feeling. But the screening went well and everyones input and suggestions were incredibly helpful. And I got through it. All of which is just to say: to those of you who have faced a fear of public exposure via a wedding toast, an open mic, or otherwise getting out of your comfort zone in front of other people, I have a newfound respect for your bravery and Id like to salute you. And to myself, I heartily pat myself on the back, and look forward to some self-care in the form of coffee, beer, and a good nights sleep. One of these days.
