TSSOM CRUISE UPDATE: June 19, 2014 Location: N 53 53.6 W 009 8.7 Course: 255 Speed 4.2 kt Weather: Mostly Cloudy Wind: NW 18 kt Seas: Slight Sea Swell We departed Kiel under cloudy skies and light mist but that eventually gave way to intermittent sun as we transited West through the Kiel Canal. During our stay in Kiel we were treated to tours of the German U-boat Memorial, personalized tours of the CAT/MAK production facility (the place where our main engine was manufactured 30 years ago), and a group got to tour the German Maritime Cadet training tall ship. In the evenings, students had the opportunity to see the European excitement about the start of World Cup matches, including the celebration of Germanys win over Portugal in their first match of the tournament. Now that we are back at sea, focus has turned toward the completion of the training program. Deck students are finishing their celestial navigation projects and the 2/C are spending time tutoring the 4/C in preparation for their exam in terrestrial navigation. The engine students are focused on their flashlight exams (Delta 2/C will be first, having their exams tomorrow followed with the 4/C in about a week). Everyone else is preparing for heavy seas. As we exit the canal into the North Sea we are expected to have 9-12 foot seas until we get down to the English Channel.
