TSSOM CRUISE UPDATE: May 20, 2014 Location: N 35 57.5 W 010 12.0 Course: 093 Speed 14.4 kt Weather: Cloudy Wind: SE 20 kt Seas: Moderate SE Swell 6-8 ft In keeping with our support to the program Educational Passages, we prepared and launched a sailboat that was built by the program and delivered to the TSSOM prior to departing Castine. These boats are equipped with a GPS tracking system that allows students in Maine schools to see how wind and currents move across the globe. This year we launched a sailboat named BOB ALONG. Students brought the boat on deck for antenna checks and rigging the small mast & sail before carefully lowering the boat over the side. Once in the water, the boat was towed briefly before being released to begin its voyage. You can track BOB ALONG on the website educationalpassages. Todays TSSOM Fact of the Day comes from Cadet Chief Engineer 2/C Isaac Grindle: The largest fuel tank aboard, 5-47-0 has the capacity to hold over 314,000 gallons of heavy fuel oil. If you tried to fill it up at the local gas station, it would cost you in the neighborhood of $1.16 million.
