TU Editorial Opinion roundup: Symphony on the right track Mon, Jul 1, 2013 @ 3:23 pm It’s great to read a report on the Jacksonville Symphony that is filled with positive developments. That was the reaction to the news story by Charlie Patton in the Times-Union following the symphony’s annual meeting. There is new leadership at the staff level. There is a trimmed board that seems better organized. There is a new sense of direction that includes more revenue-producing events. There is resolution of a dispute with the musicians union that thankfully never stopped performances. And there are marching orders from consultant Henry Fogel, a man with wide respect. The symphony needs a new sense of entrepreneurship. Clearly, there are opportunities throughout Florida and Southeast Georgia. Fogel had reported that the symphony culture had become too risk-averse due to a fear of failure. There also was a toxic sense of negativity. Now all that has changed. There is every reason to believe the symphony should be a role model nationally. Jacksonville has an outstanding concert hall. There is a long tradition of philanthropic support. Many of the musicians have a long and proud tenure here, contributing to a unique sound of this symphony. There still are major financial challenges ahead but also major opportunities. Look at how the Cummer has found a renewed sense of purpose and excitement. The symphony is poised to take advantage of them now. members.jacksonville/opinion/premium-opinion/2013-07-01/story/opinion-roundup-symphony-right-track
