TUESDAY 18TH MARCH, 2014 DID YOU KNOW APOSTLE PAUL? Saul who later became the apostle Paul was of the tribe of Benjamin, born in Tarsus. Brought up as a Pharisee and educated in Jerusalem. As a zealous young Pharisee, he spoke against Christianity and consented to the killing of Stephen one of the seven deacons. He obtained orders from the high priest to travel to Damascus to persecute the Christians there. As he neared Damascus, a miraculous light blinded him and caused him to fall to the earth, trembling with fear. He heard the voice of Jesus directing him to go into the city to learn what he should do. He was led blind into Damascus and remained in that state until Ananias, also sent by the Lord, came to him, restored his sight, and baptized him. Once converted, Paul went to Arabia for a while, then returned to Damascus and began to preach the gospel. His zeal for Jesus Christ surprised those who heard him preach. He escaped from Damascus learning of a plot to eliminate him and went to Jerusalem. The Christians in Jerusalem got convinced that Paul was truly converted and received him. Shortly after, he moved to Tarsus and joined with Barnabas. Together they went to Antioch, where they established the first Antioch Gentile church. After five years of travelling, he embarked on his second missionary journey, accompanied by Timothy and Luke. He went into Macedonia and preached at Philippi, Thessalonica, Beroea, Athens, Corinth, and Ephesus. During his life, he wrote thirteen epistles covering virtually all matters of Christian faith. Throughout his travels, Paul wrote that he had been lashed, beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, and was often in peril, weary, hungry, thirsty, cold, and naked(2nd Corinthians 11:23-28). Paul said, however, he takes pleasure in distresses, for Christ’s sake. He was a hero to many in the early Christian church, but perhaps no more so than to those who experienced miracles at his hand. Paul’s third missionary journey ended in Jerusalem where he was seized and cast out of the temple on an erroneous charge of bringing a Gentile into a forbidden place. After years of imprisonment, he was sent to Rome where he had appealed to be tried. It is believed that he was beheaded in 65 A.D. by Nero.
