TUESDAY, 9/29/14 GOSPELS. Matthew 10:17-20 (Page 1040 in the TLASB) “Who is Talking Through Me?” (By Barry) WORSHIP: I have been thinking a lot lately about desperation. This song describes that very well: https://youtube/watch?v=8j9Gh4YQMqw SCRIPTURE: blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Mat&c=10&t=NLT#s=939017 17 But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues. 18 You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me. 19 When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time. 20 For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Today’s 555 is being divided into two sections. Last week, we looked at the first section called, “Who is He Talking To?”, and today, we finish up with… SECTION 2. Who is Talking Through Me? As Jesus was sending out his apostles (which means “sent ones”) on their mission, He told them they would do lots of amazing miracles. As we find out in today’s passage, He also told them that it would not be all fun and games. He assured them that, since they were followers of Jesus, they would be: —Arrested. — Unfairly treated in court. —Flogged (beaten) with whips. That does NOT sound like a party, does it? But Jesus told them that these OBSTACLES would be OPPORTUNITIES. He promised them that, even when they had to stand in front of kings, they wouldn’t have to worry about knowing what to say. Why? Because the Spirit of God would be there. And the Spirit would give them the “right words at the right time.” God Himself was planning on speaking through them! Here are some thoughts and questions: —1. How do you think these apostles felt as they heard Jesus’ words? Were they excited? Scared? Worried? —2. Why do you think God allows these kinds of things to happen to His followers? —3. When you speak, WHO IS SPEAKING THROUGH YOU? Are you influenced by the music you listen to, the movies you watch, the friends you hang out with, your parents, your teachers? Of course you are! So, when you open your mouth, the question is not WHAT comes out, but WHO? PRAYER: -Ask God to be the one who speaks TO you and THROUGH you! Ask Him to prepare you, so that when you are put in what seems to be a negative situation, you will allow Him to show you that it is an opportunity!
