TUESDAY, August 27 Mark 13:28-37. From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. Christmas is far away, but when I saw a member of our church at the swimming pool the other day, I immediately thought of Christmas. Every year, on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, he sets up an artificial Christmas tree in our parish hall. It is really pretty terrible looking, probably purchased at one of the local discount stores. People complain and ask him to buy a prettier tree. He always refuses and insists that the tree has special powers. After a few days, he attaches more than a hundred cards to the tree with red ribbons. There is a gift described on each card. Members of the church take a card and then bring the gift back, with the card attached, and place it under the tree. On the last Sunday of Advent, the gifts and cards are delivered to the youth at the halfway house down the street. It brings them joy and happiness on a very special day, and it does the same for us. It is almost a hundred degrees outside today, but I’m already thinking about Christmas and that ugly artificial tree—the one with the special power. (From Forward Day by Day)
