TUESDAY, July 9 Psalm 5. But as for me, through the greatness of your mercy I will go into your house; I will bow down toward your holy temple in awe of you. In September 2010, I entered Seminary of the Southwest to study for ordination. Every day we had Morning Prayer, noontime Eucharist, and Evening Prayer, with sung services twice a week. Have you ever been to a sung Morning Prayer or Evensong? They are beautiful services. Chanted psalms seemed so difficult at first, but week after week we chanted until chanting became as natural as speaking. It is hard to convey how deeply I loved those daily offices and Eucharists in our chapel. To pray with anywhere from four to sixty people, day after day, was to be formed. Because of the experience of daily worship, I am not the same woman I was in September 2010. In our fast-fix, on-the-go society, worshiping three times a day may seem a waste of time, but I believe that the most important work that my classmates and I did for those three years was to worship God. As we go into ministry, I suspect that some of us will continue to keep these daily devotions in the churches to which we are called. I hope the power and awe of these shared prayers will touch and form our congregations. (From Forward Day by Day)
