TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2014 “THE SCOFFER…THE SIMPLE…THE WISE” Good morning my dear friend. Welcome again to Wisdom Speaks Daily Devotional. Today the voice of Wisdom comes to us from the book of Proverbs chapter 21 verse 11: When the scoffer is punished, the simple is made wise; but when the wise is instructed, he receives knowledge. [NKJV] In the school of life, you have the power to choose the kind of student you wish to be; and your kind also determines the way you choose to learn life’s lessons. You can choose to be a scoffer, a simpleton or a wise person. A scoffer learns by being punished. To the scoffer the old adage, “Experience is the best teacher,” is always true, especially of pains. A simpleton learns by observing a scoffer suffer pain. A simpleton is like the Apostle Thomas, he does not believe in the reality of pain until he observes others suffer. But the wise simply learns by hearing and obeying instructions. God our loving Life-Instructor has no pleasure at all in scoffers because their scoffing kills them eventually; and according to Him, “I have no pleasure in the death of one who dies.” His will is that every one of us would become wise and learn to avoid the unnecessary pains of life by simply learning and adhering to His instructions for our life. And His instructions are written in the Holy Scriptures, aka the Bible. You don’t need to experience the painful consequences of a sinful life, whether in time or eternity. You have seen more than enough evidences that prove to you that sin has painful but avoidable consequences. You can choose to be wise: to gain knowledge by the instructions of the Word of God. The Holy Scriptures have power to make you wise, even if you are presently a simpleton: “The entrance of [God’s] words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple…The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.” By choosing to abandon the rebellious ways of the scoffer and the unbelieving paths of the simpleton, and then choosing the pathway of the wise—those who learn by divine instructions, you too will be able to testify like the psalmist who wrote, “Concerning the works of men, by the word of [God’s] lips, I have kept away from the paths of the destroyer.” PRAYER: My God and Teacher, Thank You for making Your Word available to me. I choose to be wise. I choose to live by Your knowledge. By Your words I keep away from the paths of the destroyer, in Jesus name. Amen.
