TUESDAY, September 17 Psalm 61. Set me upon the rock that is higher than I. Like everyone, I have bad days—days when nothing seems to go my way, when I oversleep and lose my keys and forget my umbrella and miss lunch and…you get the idea. And then sometimes I have really bad days, facing deaths and injustices and the many evils at work in our world. On these days, I appreciate having psalms that express dark laments of the human spirit in addition to those that joyfully praise God. Psalm 61 is a plea for God’s protection, a call for God to listen. When I feel like my world is crumbling, I might cry for God to “set me upon the rock that is higher than I,” to protect me from the overwhelming storms of my life and bring me to a safe place I could not reach on my own. I am thankful for the many emotions verbalized within the psalms, so that on days when I have trouble voicing my own prayers to God, I can lean on the words of others. (From Forward Day by Day)
