TUESDAY TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1995, The Homestead YMCA Family Center and Preschool opened at Harris Field in partnership with the City of Homestead. The YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) primary areas of focus are Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. The YMCA brings families together using fitness, sports, and fun activities resulting in greater health and well-being overall. They are built on a foundation of volunteers, donors, leaders and partners who ensure South Floridians have the resources to be healthy, confident and connected. The 2nd annual YMCA Jingle Bell 5K Run (December 13, 2014 at 5 p.m.) is a prime example of how the YMCA uses fun and exercise to benefit and give back to the community. The Jingle Bell Run is open to all ages and is a 3.1 mile race that begins at Homestead Hospital and ends at the YMCA, walking or running a scenic tree-lined route. The race is a professionally-timed event and each participant will receive their time and place at the end of the run. The first 500 runners will receive a Finishers Award. There is also an after-race party at the YMCA for the runners and their supportive family members. The proceeds from the annual Jingle Bell Run go to the Homestead YMCA’s Financial Assistance Program which provides scholarship assistance for local individuals and families in need of YMCA’s supportive and positive programs such as preschool and after-school, swim lessons, summer camp, youth sports and fitness classes for all ages. These opportunities have changed lives, placing children on the right track and giving them hope. In 2013, $250,000 in financial aid was awarded throughout the community.
