TUITION FEES ASSISTANCE FOR VICTIMS OF APARTHEID The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development calls upon all victims of apartheid that were declared such by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to apply for assistance in tuition fees for basic and higher education and training. WHO QUALIFIES FOR ASSISTANCE? • A person declared a victim by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission; and/or their dependants or relatives. • A dependant includes any person to whom the Truth and Reconciliation Commission identified as victim or has/had a legal or customary duty to support children, grandchildren and the spouse of the identified victim. WHAT ABOUT RELATIVES? Relatives qualify if the person fits into any of the following categories: • A parent or someone who exercises/exercised parental responsibility over the victim. • A person married to a victim under any law, custom or belief; and • A child of a victim, whether born in or out of wedlock or was legally adopted. BASIC EDUCATION AND TRAINING ASSISTANCE • Applicant must be a member of a household which earns less R 132 000-00 gross income per year. • Must be a member of vulnerable household. HIGHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING ASSISTANCE • The applicant must be a member of a household which earns less than R198000-00 gross income per year. • Must be a member of a vulnerable household (A vulnerable household is a household consisting of four (4) or more members where: • The majority of members are over the age of 65; • The majority of members are receiving social assistance. • One member is physically or mentally disabled; • One member is under 18 years of age and has to work; or • Only one member is working. CLOSSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 2015 IS 07 FEBRUARY 2015. The application forms are available at any Magistrates’ Court, Regional Offices and at justice.gov.za.
