TURNER RANCH David Turner and his son, William T., came to California in 1852. After working the mines in the Mariposa region they settled in La Grange and opened a livery business. David Turner was killed by a falling tree in 1857. William married Mary Ellen Camp in 1861 in La Grange and in 1862 moved to Hornitos and went into partnership with William L. Davis. In 1865, Turner and Davis purchased a ranch from J. Debbins. The ranch was located about two miles north of Hornitos. They held on to this ranch for just a few years. In 1872, W.T. Turner purchased 160 acres east of Hornitos. By 1875, his ranch consisted of 230 acres, 1 Wagon, Farming Utensils, 2 horses, 2 colts, 16 cows, 16 calves, 25 stock cattle, and 70 hogs. The Turner Ranch continued to grow and in 1878 it included 385 acres. William Turner was elected Constable for Hornitos until he was elected Sheriff of Mariposa County in 1886. He served as County Sheriff until his death in 1892. His son, William Grant Turner, was appointed sheriff to finish out his fathers term, but declined to run again. Alexander B. Turner, one of his other sons also served as Sheriff for two terms from 1919 to 1927. The Turner ranch is still a working ranch today.
